Family of Things

Family of Things (FOT) is an indie band based out of Hamilton, Ontario. Their unique sound combines sensitive songwriting, boundless vocals, rhythmic integrity and quality production. Music partners Aaron Brown and Bradley Barnham self-released their debut EP in the fall of 2016 with producer Peter Mol. The EP gained instant support and media coverage, seeing over a million Spotify streams, topping playlists for New Music Friday and Indie Allstars, among others. With a few years under their belt, and a better sense of direction, Brad and Aaron moved their studio up north to a family cottage with Peter to collaborate on their first full-length record, during which time they signed a publishing deal with Seattle-based Luna Music Group.

That debut record, titled “Oscilloscope”, has garnered success across North America, seeing engagement with Spotify Editorial playlists such as New Music Friday, Indie All Stars, It’s a Bop!, Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds: Pop, Soda, Rock Your Block, and Indie Favourites. “Oscilloscope” also had songs listed on CBC’s “ Three New Songs You Need to Hear This Week”, and has been played on CBC/Sirus XM/Canadian Indie radio, seeing a wealth of editorial coverage.

Today, having released a deluxe version of the record, Aaron and Brad have curated a captivating and electric live show with bandmates Will Gooch and Myles Rogers. It was this dynamic live show that drew the attention of Paquin Artist Agency, and after signing with agent Sarah Litt, Family of Things have had the privilege of sharing stages with acts such as Tame Impala, Born Ruffians, Bad Bad Not Good and many others.

Along with the release of their first single “Harm”, FOT created and released a music video with award-winning director Mark Bone, earning them a Prism Prize nomination. The music video was premiered through Exclaim! and had a sold-out release show sponsored by Paquin Artist Agency, CMW, and the Rivoli.

Over the pandemic, Aaron and Brad shifted their creative and professional attention to production, and sought out opportunities to produce for other artists. In the summer of 2020, FOT moved to the Sunshine Coast in BC for 3 months to produce a record for artist Zerbin, which brought about their collaborative single and homemade music video "Real Strong Woman".

Following that, they returned home and spent the next year-and-a-half producing music for a handful of well-established artists including singer/songwriter/actress Amy Forsyth, folk artist Emily Flack and K-pop star Sunmi. All of this, while simultaneously scoring a short film with award-winning director Mark Klassen. They have actively kept an open door to invite as many collaborative projects in as possible, and most recently with Musicbed created a new single “Slingshot” coupled with a live video collaboration with Youtuber Lizzie Pierce.

The single is the first release of FOT’s next record, which will grapple shared experiences like love, heartbreak, loneliness and joy, all packaged in a narrative vessel. The future looks bright for Family of Things, as the coming year is brimming with new releases, new opportunities, and new seasons.
